LOUIS (AP) World Series champions change. Stadiums change. Stars of the game change. Baseball's All -Star game winner is always the same.
On a night to savor defense and relief pitching, Carl Crawford pulled back a home run with a leaping grab an inning before Curtis Granderson tripled and scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning. That boosted the American League to a 4-3 victory Tuesday night at new Busch Stadium, its seventh straight win since the All -Star game has been used to determine home-field advantage for the World Series. "We came here on a mission and the mission All Star Game was accomplished," said Mariano Rivera, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his record fourth All -Star save, breaking a tie with Dennis Eckersley. The home-field advantage innovation began after 2002's 7-7, 11-inning tie at Milwaukee. The AL is 12-0-1 since its 1996 defeat at Philadelphia the longest unbeaten streak in -Star history.
"It is so important to get home- advantage in the World Series," said Tampa Bay's Joe Maddon, the AL manager. "So there was a lot on the line there today!" Not even President Barack Obama's ceremonial first pitch helped the NL, which had been 4-0 previously when sitting presidents threw out the first offering. The NL scored all its runs in the second inning, and 22 of its last 24 batters made out. (AP) A federal judge denied a pro online poker player's request Tuesday to have his amateur golfer status reinstated. Dusty Schmidt (pictured above) had filed a complaint seeking a preliminary restraining order that would have allowed him to keep his USGA amateur status and play in a series of events in the Pacific Northwest. The USGA has maintained that Schmidt gave up his amateur status when he threw down a $1 million challenge to anyone who could beat him at 72 holes of golf and at poker.
U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mosman turned down the request, saying Schmidt did not meet a legal standard of having a contract with the USGA. "It's disappointing, obviously," Schmidt said, "because I wanted to play golf." Schmidt was a promising golfer from Southern California who went professional after a year at UC Irvine. But at age 23, he suffered a career-ending heart attack. While recuperating, Schmidt took up online poker and eventually made a profession of it.
Names in the game Dale Tallon helped restore the Chicago Blackhawks from a struggling hockey franchise to a young and talented team that went all the way to the Western Conference finals in May. Tuesday, Tallon lost his job as general manager. His ouster came a week after a missed deadline for sending qualifying Dale Tallon offers to restricted free agents prompted the NHL Players Association to file a grievance against the team. Tallon was placed by Stan Bowman, the son of NHL coaching legend Scotty Bowman. Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi faces three drunk-driving related charges, including extreme DUI, for a July 2 incident in which she also was cited for speeding.
A Phoenix police report released Tuesday shows Taurasi's blood -alcohol level was 0.17 percent, or more than twice the Arizona legal limit of 0.08 percent. Providence men's basketball coach Keno Davis has been given a contract extension through the 2015-16 season after his first season in which the Friars won 19 games. Davis, the 2008 AP Coach of the Year at Drake, guided Providence to a 19-14 overall record and Keno Davis a 10-8 Big East mark. The win total was the most by a Providence coach in his first season.
