What to do if you have a Bursar hold:

  1. Make sure you’ve filed your FAFSA and TAP for 2023-2024. If you are selected for Verification of any information on those applications you should follow up immediately or jeopardize your eligibility for federal, state and Macaulay aid.
  2. Pay your student fees. Unless the total amount of your financial aid (PELL, TAP, Valone Scholarship, etc.) equals more than the tuition charge ($3465) you owe fees. You can find a breakdown of these fees here: https://www.brooklyn.edu/bursar/tuition-and-fees/undergraduate/
  3. If you receive TAP, check the FACTS website to make sure the courses you are taking are eligible. If they aren’t, speak to your advisor asap.

When to email Ms. Grant in Financial Aid:

  1. If you have examined your financial aid and determined that your aid listed is not enough to cover your tuition.
  2. If you were denied TAP because of family income. The MHC waiver must be manually posted to your account.
  3. Email Mgrant@brooklyn.cuny.edu and cc macaulayhonorsfinaid@brooklyn.cuny.edu. Include your emplid.

When to contact the Bursar’s Office:

  1. If the aid is equal to or greater than the tuition and a bill is still due. You should contact the Bursar’s Office to review payments due.
  2. You can go in person to the Enrollment Services Center (ESC) or call (718)951-5200 for assistance.

What you should do every semester:

  1. Pay your student fees before each term begins.
  2. Periodically review your CUNYfirst account.
  3. Tuition charges and payment by financial aid including the Macaulay tuition waiver should be tracked.

All students are advised to review their CUNYfirst accounts to note if the aid status is correctly indicated (i.e. all aid posted, all aid not posted, incorrect amount of aid posted in excess of tuition, ineligible for Macaulay tuition waiver posted for a self- funded semester, refund not processed). Any student with a question about their aid for their bill is advised to send an e-mail for review of their account information. E-mails must be sent to Macaulay Honors Financial Aid MacaulayHonorsFinAid@brooklyn.cuny.edu and copied to Mgrant@brooklyn.cuny.edu

Reminder: Macaulay tuition formula used to determine eligibility when reviewing CUNYfirst account: Allowable Tuition – (TAP-+TAP Waiver + CUSTA+ HESC Scholarships + Vallone/NYC Merit Scholarship + PELL + SEOG + Other Scholarships) if a tuition balance = MHC Tuition Waiver

A Few Reminders:

  • Students must have filed their 2024-2025 FAFSA and TAP applications and completed any follow up processes required.
  • Students not full time for a Fall or Spring semester must have approval indicating their eligibility for the MHC tuition waiver from Macaulay Central (copy of approval e-mail must be sent to MacaulayHonorsFinAid@brooklyn.cuny.edu and copied to Mgrant@brooklyn.cuny.edu).
  • Students should apply the Macaulay tuition formula to determine eligibility when reviewing their account: Allowable Tuition – (TAP-+TAP Waiver + CUSTA+ HESC Scholarships + Vallone/NYC Merit Scholarship + PELL + SEOG + Other Scholarships) if a tuition balance = MHC Tuition Waiver
  • Students allowed 1 course (up to 4 credits) in the winter. (The Macaulay formula is applied to determine tuition waiver eligibility. Credits above the allowable amount are not considered for the Macaulay tuition waiver.) First year students may not take winter classes.
  • Students participating in a study abroad program for the winter with special approval from Macaulay Central can be considered for a maximum of 6 credits. (The Macaulay formula is applied to determine tuition waiver eligibility. Credits above the allowable amount are not considered for the Macaulay tuition waiver.)
  • Students are allowed up to a total of 8 credits for the summer. (The Macaulay formula is applied to determine tuition waiver eligibility. Credits above the allowable amount are not considered for the Macaulay tuition waiver.)
  • Students approved for additional semesters in the Macaulay Program under the self-funded status must report if the Macaulay tuition waiver posts to CUNYfirst in order that it can be removed.
  • Students who do not have financial aid in excess of their tuition charges are responsible for paying their student fees, materials/lab fees and change of program fees.
  • Students should check prior semesters on CUNYfirst to ensure information is also up to date.

Taking a Course on Epermit at Another Campus

Instructions for filing a permit can be found here: https://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/web/about/administration/enrollment/registrar/e-permits.php

Steps for Taking a Course at Another CUNY Campus:
1. Use Transfer Explorer to find the BC equivalency for the course.
2. File the permit on CUNYfirst.
3. Once your permit has been approved and entered in the system at the host campus, you will receive a registration appointment date from the host campus. You will then be able to register for the class.
4. If you’re studying abroad, check with the Study Abroad Office at the host campus to determine whether you will be registered by their office or not.

Steps for Taking a Macaulay Central class:
1. Pre-register for the course you are interested in.
2. Once you are notified that you’ve been granted a seat in the course, let your advisor know so they can release your HON hold and advise you about the equivalency.
3. File the permit
4. When the permit is approved by the BC Registrar, you will be registered for the class by the Macaulay Registrar. You don’t have to register yourself for the class.
5. If you change your mind, you’ll need to be dropped from the MHC course and then you’ll be able to cancel the permit in CUNYfirst.
